Today has been another grand day in the shift to end cannabis prohibition.

Only hours ago, the Vermont senate voted 16 to 13 in favour of a bill that would legalize the sale and possession of marijuana for recreational purposes by 2018. Governor Peter Shumlin said an estimated 80,000 Vermonters are currently buying, growing, and using marijuana illegally.

Senate Judiciary Committee chair Richard Sears said legalizing marijuana is an appropriate measure given these statistics.

“Does the current system of prohibition work? The answer is clear,” said Sears. The decision faces another vote on Thursday, February 25th in the senate before being passed before the House.

Meanwhile, at almost exactly the same time, medical marijuana also just became legal in Australia. The Australian Parliament amended the Narcotics Drugs Act to allow for cannabis to be grown for medical and scientific purposes for the first time in the country.

Minister for Health Sussan Ley called this a “historic day for Australia” and its many advocates who have been challenging the stigma around medicinal marijuana products for years.

"This is the missing piece in a patient's treatment journey and will now see seamless access to locally-produced medicinal cannabis products from farm to pharmacy,” Ley Said.

And to top things off, the Canadian Supreme Court also ruled AGAINST a ban on medical marijuana patients to grow their own. Supreme Court judge Michael Phelan ruled today that the Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations were an infringement on charter rights and declared they have no force and effect.

Phelan also suspended his declaration for six months to give the federal government time to come up with new regulations. This means thousands of medical cannabis patients will continue to be able to grow their own cannabis without having to rely solely on the 27 licensed growers in the country.
