"He's been charged with assault, three counts of assault, and one count of criminal mischief," said Thomas Antonetti of the NYPD.
Antonetti also noted that Cian Cowley, another MMA fighter, has also been charged with assault.
The incident has led to several injuries and canceled fights. According to reports, McGregor and his entourage entered through a side entrance at a UFC press conference for Saturday's fight card at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. They then proceeded to attack a van containing a group of rival fighters. It's been reported that lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov may have been the target of Conor McGregor's attack. The 29-year-old Russian fighter and Artem Lobov, friend and training partner to McGregor, recently got into a confrontation. Speculation is rising that Thursday night's attack was a form of revenge.
"They stormed the building, got down to the loading docks where the fighters were getting on buses and started to attack the buses, throwing trash cans and dollies and things like that," UFC president Dana White explained.
The UFC announced that lightweight Michael Chiesa suffered severe cuts to his face and has been forced to pull out of Saturday's event. Several other suffered minor injuries as well.
Conor McGregor is the first European MMA fighter to hold titles from two divisions. In 2013 he became the second Irishman to compete for the UFC. His success as a fighter has brought him fame and fortune and his most recent boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr (which McGregor lost) was one of the most anticipated events of 2017.
Conor McGregor does not hold American citizenship. If convicted of the charges, there is a possibility he will be denied future entry into the United States. Such action could seriously hurt McGregor's career.
