Believe it or not, there are a lot of people that love to use cannabis medically and recreationally but do not like the idea of smoking, and there is nothing wrong with that. Filling your lungs with smoke of any kind can be harmful to your health. Luckily, there are a variety of smoke-free ways to consume marijuana. There are a plethora of edibles on the market that range from chocolate bars and gummies to cannabis-infused drinks, but what about cannabis tincture?

What Is Cannabis Tincture?

Tinctures are essentially cannabis extract that can be taken orally through the use of a dropper and generally come in 1 ml doses. Here’s a fun cannabis fact: cannabis tinctures were actually the most commonly used form of marijuana medicine in the United States until cannabis prohibition was put into place in the early twentieth century. Tinctures are usually made with alcohol, however, some tinctures (like the one we’re going to show you how to make) can be made with vegetable glycerine instead.

What Are The Health Benefits?

We've already covered the fact that tinctures are 100% smokeless. This makes them better for your health than other means of consuming cannabis as smoking is known to cause all sorts of respiratory issues and heart disease.

Tinctures give you fast-acting medicinal delivery that is long lasting, with just one or two 1ml drops, taken under the tongue. Unlike edibles, which can take up to an hour to take effect, the effects of tinctures can be felt within 5 or 10 minutes. This is a great thing for those that suffer from chronic illnesses, arthritis, joint pain, or muscle aches.

The best thing of all is that cannabis tinctures can be made with either indica or sativa strains so that you can better hone in on the medicinal qualities that you need most. For example, making tinctures with an indica strain will give you a better full body high that is great for stress relief and people suffering from insomnia. Want to boost creativity or mood? Try a sativa strain for the cerebral calm it provides to keep your stress level at bay.

First, you'll need to gather a few things:

– 1/8th of Decarboxylated bud

– 2 mason jars

– 1 cup vegetable glycerine

– Slow Cooker or Crock Pot

– Cloth

– Cheesecloth

– Water

Starting with one of your mason jars, pour in your 1/8th of decarbed bud and add in one cup of vegetable glycerine. Put the lid on and shake well to thoroughly mix the dry flower into the vegetable glycerine.

Break out your slow cooker or crockpot and line the bottom with a cloth. Fill the cooker up about halfway with water. Make sure the cloth is fully submerged and soaked through. Place your jar in the center or the cooker and set it to warm. Here is the hard part... walk away for 24 hours and wait. It's worth it.

When the painful wait is up, remove your jar from the cooker. Remember, the jar will be hot, so proceed with caution as use oven gloves. Take your second mason jar and line the top with a cheesecloth. Now, it's time to strain the cannabis and glycerine into the empty jar. Make sure to allow all of the liquid to strain from the cheesecloth and don't be afraid to wring it out when it's nearly finished straining.

You now have your own cannabis tincture! Transfer your tincture to some glass dropper jars and start with a 1ml dose under the tongue. Wait 10 to 15 minutes to feel the full effects. If using the tincture sublingually isn’t for you, try mixing it into tea or your favorite juices. Remember, if using this method, the tincture may take a couple of hours to take effect, similar to a cannabis edible.
