Teenage Marijuana Use is in Decline
A federal survey just shot down the myth that legalizing weed will lead to increased teenage marijuana use.
The latest National Survey on Drug Use and Health report confirmed that 2016 saw marijuana use among 12-17-year-olds drop to their lowest levels in 20 years. Marijuana use among this group was at 6.5 per cent during 2016, a 0.5 per cent drop from the previous year. The last time teenage marijuana use was this low was in 1994.
Teenage marijuana use has been in decline since weed was recreationally legalized in Washington State and Colorado in 2014. This new survey dispels the idea that legalizing weed for recreational use will only make it more available to teens looking to experiment.
These findings demonstrate that not only has legalized recreational marijuana reduced the levels of teenage marijuana use but it also tells us that teenagers are making their own decisions when it comes to using cannabis.
