cannabis news | Californians legalize weed

Proposition 64 has passed and we couldn't be happier! A long and hard-fought battle has finally put an end to over 80 years of cannabis prohibition in California. What does it all mean though? The victory was a landslide in the Golden State. Over a quarter of Americans now live in places where cannabis is controlled, regulated and taxed. What’s more, the entire West Coast is now open to the cannabis market. Thanks to America’s most populous state voting for legalization, the green rush is just getting started! Here’s what weed legalization in California means for you.

Weed Legalization in California

The Money: Weed Legalization and the Green Rush

First thing's first: Proposition 64 is going to have a significant impact the Golden State’s already flourishing economy. With the market set to triple in size, weed is about to become one of the West Coast’s most treasured industries, potentially overtaking the prestigious wine trade, and growing the market’s current value by over 200% by 2020. Experts predict the Green Rush to be worth a staggering $22 billion in four years’ time, up from $7 billion in 2016. This growth will result in over $1 billion in extra tax revenue per year for the state of California. This will undoubtedly amount to pressure on Federal policy makers to repeal dated cannabis legislation and push for across-the-board legalization nationwide.

What Legalization Means For You: The Details

The first thing you need to understand is that Proposition 64 does not mean blanket legalization across the Golden State. In the same way that alcohol is prohibited for youths, only adults over the age of 21 will be allowed to legally purchase and consume cannabis.

Moreover, measures governing the sale of cannabis will not come into force before January 2018. This means that for now, and for the next 14 months, you’re still going to have to purchase your cannabis in the same manner you always have: through a licensed dispensary, and only after showing a valid referral – be that a doctor’s recommendation or your medical marijuana card.

Immediate Changes To California's Weed Laws

While you’ll have to wait until 2018 to buy your bud like you might a Bud, some things immediately changed as of November 9th.

Firstly, if you’re a California resident over the age of 21, you can now legally carry as much as an ounce of marijuana or eight grams of concentrated cannabis on your person at any time.

Secondly, California residents may cultivate up to six plants per residence and harvest the cannabis produced by these plants. These plants must be obscured from public view, however, and harvests in excess of one ounce must be stored in a locked space that is “fully enclosed and secure”.

What Hasn’t Changed?

As we mentioned, Proposition 64 does not mean blanket legality across California. There are still rules and you better continue to follow them. Under Proposition 64, you may not:

- Consume cannabis in a public place, though on-site consumption at licensed premises will become legal at a later date. For now, stick to the privacy of your own home.
- Consume cannabis while driving or possess an open container of weed in your vehicle.
- Possess more than one ounce.
- Smoke or vaporize cannabis in any non-smoking area or within 1,000 feet of a school, day care or youth center.
